The Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to Nov. 30, so there are still weeks left this year. With the Loxahatchee River running through town and the Atlantic to the east, Jupiter can flood from seasonal rain, hurricanes and tidal surge, and the town says every property has the potential to flood. Find your zone and build your kit before a storm is named.

Know your zone
Palm Beach County draws evacuation zones for storm surge and separate flood zones for rain, drainage and tides. Type your address into the county’s Know Your Zone lookup to see both.
FEMA flood maps that took effect Dec. 20, 2024, moved thousands of residents into higher-risk flood zones, the town says. Check yours on the FEMA flood zone lookup or the town’s 2024 flood zone map (PDF). Zones A, AE, AH and AD are special flood hazard areas, and VE is the coastal high hazard area. If your zone changed, your lender may require flood insurance. Most flood policies have a 30-day waiting period, and standard homeowners policies do not cover flooding.
The town’s Jupiter Hurricane & Flood Guide has the evacuation zone map, emergency numbers and flood insurance information in one place.
Shelters
The Jupiter area has two American Red Cross shelters, according to the town:
| Shelter | Address |
|---|---|
| Independence Middle School | 4001 Greenway Drive, Jupiter |
| Palm Beach Gardens High School | 4245 Holly Drive, Palm Beach Gardens |
Not every shelter opens for every storm. Confirm on the county’s shelters page before you leave, and bring medications, identification, supplies and personal items.
- Pets: general shelters take only service animals. The county runs a pet-friendly shelter for residents of an evacuation zone or a mobile home. You must pre-register your pet first.
- Special medical needs: the county’s Special Needs Shelter Program requires online registration in advance, and space is limited. These shelters offer limited medical monitoring and are not hospitals.
Supplies are tax-free all year
Florida no longer runs a hurricane sales tax holiday. Since Aug. 1, 2025, these items are always exempt from sales tax, according to the Florida Department of Revenue’s tax notice (PDF):
- AA, AAA, C, D, 6-volt and 9-volt batteries
- Portable generators up to 10,000 running watts
- Portable gas or diesel cans of 5 gallons or less
- Waterproof tarps of 1,000 square feet or less
- Ground anchor systems and tie-down kits
- Smoke detectors, carbon monoxide alarms and fire extinguishers
The town keeps a full disaster supply list.
Your yard and swales
Do not trim trees or do yard work as a storm approaches, the town says; tree services must haul away their own trimmings. Keep swales clear of debris to reduce flooding. WM picks up yard waste twice a week; see our trash and recycling guide.
Sandbags
The town’s and county’s storm pages list no sandbag giveaway. Home improvement stores sell them.
During and after the storm
If phone, TV and web service fail, the town posts printed bulletins daily at 25 locations around Jupiter; see the list of bulletin sites (PDF). Report flooding, downed trees and damage in the JupConnect app. Never walk or drive through moving water: 6 inches can knock you off your feet, and most flood deaths happen in vehicles, the town warns.
Repairs to roofs, windows and other storm damage may need a permit; see the town’s post-storm permitting page and our permits guide. For power, see our power outage guide.
